The History of Unicorn Cheese
In 1977 Frenchman Gilbert Pesenti established a small cheese factory (Piam Pty. Ltd.) on the Brancourts site in Yagoona, NSW. Gilbert commenced manufacturing and selling Camembert and Brie cheeses under the Unicorn Cheese brand name.
1980 saw the movement of this flourishing business to the current site in the Flinders Estate, Nowra. Nowra is a town located on the Shoalhaven River and nestled on the beautiful Shoalhaven coast. During the 1980′s Piam Pty Ltd won the NSW Small Business Awards three times, 1987, 1988 and again in 1989.
1990 brought a change of ownership, when Mr. Pesenti sold Piam Pty Ltd to Snow Brand Milk Products Co. Ltd, a multi national company.
Snow Brand Milk Products Co. decided in 1999 to merge all its Australian companies into one, and so Snow Brand Australia Pty Ltd was born. Piam Pty Ltd then became known as the Cheese Division of Snow Brand Australia Pty Ltd.
Since this time great strides forward have been made to bring Unicorn Cheese into line with modern cheese making methods. Snow Brand Australia Pty Ltd has purchased world-class cheese making equipment and turned the factory into a “state of the art” cheese making facility. The quality and traditional flavours of our cheeses have not been compromised as a result of this modernisation.
